In the nineteenth century, nationalism had been one of the major ideologies in the western countries; this particular ideology had a very important impact not just to the political situation, but also to culture, arts, crafts and also music. We have to be clear that the nationalist movement is rather different from the revolutionary movements, the nationalist movements will not initiate with protest rallies but with the emergence of literary societies, historical research, music festivals and cultural journals. These social groups and activities provided not just as an effective way to spread the idea of nationalism but also serve as an effective academic improvement. The idea of nationalism had influenced various important composers in the late nineteenth-century, we will discuss how these composers express the ideology through the medium of the symphony.
The concept of nationalism begin around the time where the French revolution and the American War of Independence took place , there are various elements that could associated with nationalism ideology, but it is still arguable. Nationalism begins mainly in the German-speaking countries, post-Kantian German philosophers whom transmuted the enlightenment political thought that eventually bring up the cultural nationalism ideology in Germany. The eastern part of Europe begins the ideology of nationalism in a rather different way, which includes liberal and ethnic nationalism, but the original source of idea begins from the Western Europe, mainly Germany. The Franco-Prussian War in the late nineteenth century also created a huge impact on the idea of nationalism. Ten days before the fell of Paris, the German states combined and united as a nation state. While during Napoleon’s reign he created the phenomena of nationalism of other countries such as Spain and Austria, the ruling and invasion of Napoleon stimulated the idea of nationalism in these countries’ people, which resulted as various rebellions from these countries. In the late nineteenth century, composers such as Dvorak and Tchaikovsky had implied the elements of nationalism in their works, particularly Dvorak, his symphony No.8 and Symphony No.9 ‘From the New world’ had been viewed as the typical late nineteenth century nationalism work, but what element that these works has that showed the idea of nationalism? We first have to try to define the term nationalism. It is very difficult to try to answer what is nationalism, the definition is not defined by nationality or the boundaries of territory, it is defined by the relationship of cultural identity such as language, ethnic, or religions. The idea of nationalism shall not be viewed in parallel with nationality, as Grove Music Online put it “nationality is a condition, nationalism is an attitude.” Music is probably the form that is affected most by the idea of nationalism during the late nineteenth century; it is viewed as a reaction to the supremacy of the German music.
