The perception of a so-called beat or pulse within music, and the ability to synchronise movements to this pulse was thought, until recently, to reside only in humans (Merker B. , 1999-2000). The evidence for this response of rhythmic entrainment or beat perception synchronisation (BPS) to a particular pulse is a near universal phenomenon spanning cultures worldwide (Nettl, 2000) (Repp, 2006). Aside from a small minority of individuals who are diagnosed with beat deafness amusia, who find musical experiences 'difficult' (Stewart, 2011); the ability to perceive and rhythmically entrain to musical content within an auditory stimulus is common to all listeners regardless of their musical environment, culture, or upbringing (Patel, 2006).

The ability for the perception and entrainment to a pulse is so widespread among human cultures that some researchers have begun to argue that the phenomenon of beat perception has an evolutionary purpose and an important role in human developmental history (Changizi, 2011, p. 127). Beat perception can be achieved almost unconsciously by humans who appear to be innately able to discern a pulse from auditory data (Juslin, 2011). Music has had a difficult relationship with evolutionary speculation (Cross, 2008). Aside from the controversial description of music as and a parasitic offshoot of other cognitive mechanisms or 'auditory cheesecake' provided by the eminent Stephen Pinker (1997, p. 534) in reference to the significance of music to evolutionary history, the study of the evolutionary value of music appears to be inconclusive (Cross, 2003) (Huron, 2003). Beat perception synchronization (the ability of an organism to entrain its movements to a regular pulse) has been enthusiastically received by psychologists and musicians alike as a strong contender for providing a theory of the evolutionary importance of music
